Xerox Art

These are a few examples of xerox art from a much larger multimedia project I did years ago centred around the Red Army Faction. The project dealt with the RAF as a violent collision of different currents within post-war German society. I was particularly interested in the mindset, experiences, and ideology of Ulrike Meinhof and others within the RAF.

I discovered this technique somewhat accidentally after scanning in some old photos of 1950s West Germany I had got at an antique shop.

I had the idea to distort and disrupt the scanning process, just out of curiosity about what would happen. I loved the textural depth it added, so I decided to play around much more with it and create these pieces, among others.

It was only afterwards that I found out that this technique had already been named and put to some very creative use.

My intention here was to use physical objects to thematically represent elements of the overall project, including the contemporary political context, the long shadow of Germany's past, and Ulrike Meinhof's upbringing and later life.
